Marq Johnson, April 2017’s voter’s choice winner of the IFE TOP 10 voting program, is now positioned at #5 with the single ‘God Yuh Good’, after a landslide victory of 52% votes. ‘God Yuh Good’ is the first gospel track featured on the IFE TOP 10 Charts.
Hailing from Harbour View, St. Andrew, Johnson was brought up in the church as a pastor’s kid (PK). From the age of 7 Johnson was classically trained in piano. His musical background and expertise opened doors for him to become a choir director, for which his accomplishments includes being the technical director for 11 choirs including a 400 voice choir when Bishop T.D. Jakes came to Jamaica.
Yet his later transition to becoming a solo artist was not an easy one. In a Jamaica Star newspaper feature in November 2016, entitled “Marq Johnson follows his dream”, Johnson shared that during his first recording session, the producer told him to stick to the piano.
“My first time in a studio, the producer told me that lead vocalists are born, not made, so I should go back to piano. He actually said that in front of the rest of the band.”
After all his musical accomplishments, this humiliating setback fueled Johnson to pursue his solo career more vehemently taking vocal classes, later re-emerging on the music scene in 2015.
In August 2015, Johnson released his debut single, ‘Pulse Get Weak’, in Cayman, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica. He later released a self-titled EP in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in May 2016 including the tracks ‘Nah Sell Out”, ‘Rise of a Resolute’ and ‘Pulse Get Weak’.
