Soca music (also defined by Lord Shorty, its inventor, as the “Soul Of Calypso”) is a genre of music that originated within a marginalized subculture in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 1970s, and developed into a range of styles by the 1980s and later.
Soca music is a genre of music from the Caribbean, in fact it was developed in Trinidad and Tobago in the early 1970s as an up-tempo dance-type of music.
Lord Shorty, a famous calypsoian invented Soca calling it the “Soul of Calypso” afterwards it evolved into various styles in the 1980, for example, Ragga-Soca, Chutney and even Rapso at one point in time.
Calypso music or “Kaiso” was losing it popularity among the younger generation and for this reason Soca music came to revive it with a faster beat and sometimes instructions to move and dance in the lyrics.
Caribbean countries including Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados, Grenada, Antigua and Saint Lucia are just some of islands responsible of the Soca music’s evolution.
